Aquele código colocado na etiqueta de bagagens ou impresso na passagem aérea é uma sigla criada pelo IATA, a chamada IATA airport code, também chamada de IATA location identifier, IATA station code ou simplesmente location identifier, é um código formado por três letras que designa muitos aeroportos ao redor do mundo.
São geralmente fáceis de serem interpretados, por exemplo, o código IATA para London Heathrow é LHR. Outros não são tão óbvios, como CMH para Columbus, Ohio, USA ou ORD for Chicago O'Hare (formalmente chamado Orchard Field), USA.
A elaboração dos códigos e regida pela resolução 767 do IATA e admninstrada pelo seu escritório central em Montreal. Os códigos são publicados bianualmente no catalogo IATA Airline Coding Directory. Os códigos não são exclusivos: alguns dos 323 dos possíveis 17,576 códigos são usados para mais de um aeroporto.
Apesar de serem os mais vistos pelos passageiros, o código de quatro letras do ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) airport codes estão se tornando mais e mais usados na aviação. Todos os vôos internacionais tem seu planejamento traçados com códigos do ICAO e a maioria dos equipamentos de GPS (Global Positioning System) tem em sua configuração padrão os códigos do ICAO. Muitos paises como o Canadá não usam mais o código IATA em suas publicações oficiais.

A elaboração dos códigos e regida pela resolução 767 do IATA e admninstrada pelo seu escritório central em Montreal. Os códigos são publicados bianualmente no catalogo IATA Airline Coding Directory. Os códigos não são exclusivos: alguns dos 323 dos possíveis 17,576 códigos são usados para mais de um aeroporto.
Apesar de serem os mais vistos pelos passageiros, o código de quatro letras do ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) airport codes estão se tornando mais e mais usados na aviação. Todos os vôos internacionais tem seu planejamento traçados com códigos do ICAO e a maioria dos equipamentos de GPS (Global Positioning System) tem em sua configuração padrão os códigos do ICAO. Cheguei a Mumbai vindo de Goa e imaginem o sucesso inicial desta viagem: - Como é natural, qualquer passageiro em trânsito e com bilhete de embarque emitido, é colocado numa sala de passageiros em trânsito a aguardar pela hora do voo. Sala essa, que sempre tem lojas e restaurantes e bares para degustação. Pois comigo e outros passageiros aconteceu o irreal. Fomos transportados do aeroporto de voos internos para o de voos internacionais e fomos "largados" na rua. Na rua disse bem. Contactei o balcão da British Airways, pelo telefone, porque não dão a cara e disseram-me que era assim mesmo. Tive de pagar 60 rupias para entrar numa sala de espera exterior, que não tem nada a não ser cadeiras de espera. E aguarda aí, as 9 horas pelo voo se quiseres.
Fui para a internet á procura do e-mail da companhia aérea. Como já é moda, não indicam e-mail e têm formulário próprio. Aqui fica a minha admiração pelos bons serviços prestados aos passageiros em trânsito.
